No Perfect Love Story, Michael/Jan, book, PG
emjay; is still my otp babe

He's always been curious about the book. It's tattered, looks to be about a million years old, and is maybe fifteen chapters long at the most judging by the thickness. But as long as they've been going out (and been broken up, and going out again and been broken up) she has been reading that book.

It doesn't have a title on the front cover -- or if it did, it has long since rubbed off by now. Or fallen off or something. Point is, it's not there anymore because the book is just so... old.

He never asks what the book is about or why it takes her so long to read it. At one point, just to double check, he asked her if she could read. And with one of those "Michael, you're nuts" looks, she responded, "Of course I can read, Michael. I'm reading right now."

Lately since she's been pregnant she can only read a chapter or two before she starts to get either nauseous or dizzy. At that point she sets the book on her swollen abdomen and runs her fingers through her hair, closing her eyes until she feels okay again.

"Good book?" he asks her one of these times.

She smiles over at him and it's serene -- he hasn't seen a smile like that on her since Jamaica. Maybe the pregnancy will finally drain her of the crazy. "It's my favorite."

This time, he's feeling bold. He reaches over and takes the book off her abdomen, minding where she'd left off. He turns it over and reads a few lines, raising his eyebrows. "'Romeo and Juliet'?"

Jan tells him she finds it inspirational, which leaves Michael worrying that she will never be drained of all the crazy. She clarifies by telling him the book is a testament to the fact that no relationship is a perfect love story. There is always some problem to overcome but, unlike Romeo and Juliet, you can't just roll over and die. You have to work at it.

She smiles over at him with another of those serene smiles then, and Michael is set at ease. So he smiles back, places the book on her abdomen again, and reaches over to kiss her forehead.
